Jan 2012: Game, Sett and Match to the Badgers

Elli Hullis reports:

The Bateman Badgers, a new small independent ladies club claimed victory in their inaugural match against Highgate School last Sunday.

The Highgate girls, as always, played fantastically and Badgers’ first pair Karen Hird and Sarah Frost had a tough game on their hands. The Highgate pair had recently strongly challenged Karen and her partner Emily Scoones at the Ladies Nationals the week before. As expected the match proved to be hotly contested and great to watch, with some brilliant back court rallies between Karen and Highgate’s Aimee Paul. The Badgers took the first game 12-6, followed by a slightly closer score of 12-10 to win the match.

Second pair Elli Hullis and Annabel Griffiths were made to work a little harder, with Highgate taking the first game 12-10 in a hard pushed game where every point was fought for. In the second game, the Badgers came back strongly and took the match to a decider. No one was giving anything away in the final game with all to play for, but the Badgers managed to seal the victory 12-9.

A great day of Fives was had by all, with special thanks to Anthony Brunner for the use of the courts.
