Charles Sheepshanks

(extract from the Eton Fives Association Annual Report 1990/91)

Etonian Charles Sheepshanks, gifted all-round sportsman too, was one of the great artists of Eton Fives.

He revelled in the intricacies of the game, and using to great effect the rubber facing of the gloves prevelant at the time, he baffled all but the most wary with his science and cunning - few effected such cut and such spin. His partnership with Jack Peterson survived the Second World War, their first Kinnaird win being in 1935, their last in 1950, a remarkable achievement. Charles' last match in the competition was with another of his life-long friends, Alan Barber, who was later to become President of the Eton Fives Association.
