Old Millhillians Clinch The Division One Title In A Thrilling Finale
13/04/26: The Old Millhillians 1 won the Division One title for the first time since 2018 with a fine win over closest challengers North Oxford 1 at Summer Fields on Saturday.
The Millhillians have been setting the pace at the top of the table for most of the season, with only North Oxford able to keep in touch, but a strong finishing run from the Oxford club meant that the destination of the title came right down to the last couple of matches.
For a time it looked as though the delayed first pair match betweeen the two teams might be a one-off winner takes all title decider; in the end the OMs had a one point cushion going into the match in Oxford on Saturday morning and the knowledge that they would finish in first place on the second tiebreaker (some checking of little known and never used countback rules going on there!) should the teams end up level.
As it happened, Sunil Tailor & Charles Plummer confirmed their place as the pre-eminent first pair in the league this year, with a tight 3-1 win (14-13, 10-12, 13-12, 12-7) in a high quality game against Isaac Weaver & Seb Cooley and a rare league match on North Oxford's home courts at Summer Fields, taking them two points head of their title rivals with the rest of the division well back.
