Alan Barber Cup Round One Round Up
27/10/25: With just one match still to be played, the quarter-final line-up for this year's Alan Barber Cup is nearly complete.
With fourteen teams in this year's competition, last year's finalists the Old Olavians and the Old Westminsters received a bye through to the Last Eight, with the other twelve teams fighting it out for the last six places.
Most disappointing were the Old Etonians, who failed to raise a side for what could have been a very interesting and close match against the Berkhamstedians, who go through to challenge the Westminsters.
On a more positive note, the Aldenhamians fielded a strong side for their match against the Old Citizens, winning all three pairs, including an epic five setter at first pair between Andrew Rennie & Darshan Patel and Edwn Gosnell & Nick Choustikov.
Aldenham's reward for their win will be a quarter-final home match against third seeds the Old Salopians, who won comfortably against a slightly understrength Barbarians team at Eton at the weekend.
Also played at the weekend was the match berween the Cholmeleians and the Edwardians at Stowe, with the Cholmeleians just making it through, despite conceding third pair and both of their other two pairs dropping a game against dogged opponents.
The upset of the round came back in September, however, with a Tom Dunbar-less Harrovian side losing 1-2 at home to an Isaac Weaver-inspired Ipswichian team, who next go to Orpington to take on the challenge of the Old Olavians in early January.
The final first round match sees the Millhillians take on Lancing on Tuesday week.
