EFA Centenary ArtEFActs: Ladies Championships Medals
In 1984, Krystyna Vargas and Veronica Hothersall won the first Ladies Tournament.
Krystyna went on to win a further three titles and finished as runner-up six times. These are some of her medals, which were first awarded for the main Eton Fives championships in 1986.
Krystyna played Fives at the Hill Eton Fives Club based at Harrow. Of the fifteen pairs that entered the first Ladies Tournament, all four semi-finalists came from the Hill club, which was recognised at the time as a model for ‘friendly Fives’.
In 1985 and 1986, Krystyna partnered Joyce Hattea to victory while, for her last win in 1987, she joined forces with Barbara Halstead.
1992 was the last year medals were given. A trophy for the Ladies Championship was first awarded in 1995.
Women and girls now play Eton Fives at over half of all UK schools and universities with courts.
The first woman to enter the national open competition, the Kinnaird Cup, was Debbie Till in 1978.
