Jan 2012 REFCA Under 14s: Stars of the Future

Dominique Redmond reports:

The annual REFCA Under 14 individual tournament took place at Eton on Sunday with 55 players from seven different Schools taking part. A special mention must go to Rydal Penhros School who came all the way down from Colwyn Bay in North Wales for this event.

This was a fantastic occasion as there was such a high standard across the different Schools - the best REFCA U14 Individual to date! We had eight players from five of the schools who won all of their matches, gaining a maximum score. Well done to Charterhouse School who had two players with maxium scores and Rydal for having three players with the maxium score. Due to the large number of maxium scores we had to decide the finalists by use of a penalty shoot out. All the potential finalists had three chances where they had to try and hit the buttress from mid back-court. Westway player Noah Caplin managed to hit the buttress three times, with Harry Russell, T.Brown and S.Ganapathi all managing two out of three hits. Unfortunately two Rydal players, an Ipswichian and Charterhouse player were eliminated. It was great to see so many players reach a maximum score and to have four finalists from different schools. The Westway/St Olave's partnership beat the Rydal/Charthouse pairing 12-11 in a fantastic and well contested final.
