Midlands 2010: Ant and Ryan's Sunday afternoon Repton takeaway

The Midlands tournament took place at Repton over the weekend of 30th/31st October and produced a terrific weekend's Fives. Every game from the quarter-finals onwards in the main tournament was close, with the final eventually being won by Ant Theodossi and Ryan Perrie against Mark Yates and Sid Simmons.

Rossall Schools Championships 2010 - All codes of Fives in perfect harmony

The fourteenth Rossall Schools’ Championships took place on the 2nd and 3rd of October. 56 pupils entered from seven schools: Wolverhampton GS, St Olave’s, Rossall, Sedbergh, Tonbridge, Bedford Modern and Emanuel School. It’s a shame that regulars, Lancing College, Malvern College and Oundle School could not make it this year, but superb that Sedbergh and Tonbridge took part for the first time.

County Championships 2010/11

Numbers were down on last year, but the competitiveness certainly wasn’t for the County Championships qualifying that took place at Eton on Sunday 24th October. Five teams took part in an all-play-all format, with two qualifying for the final (requests that four should go through to the semis being rejected by the organiser!).

Oct 2010: EFA hit the Rutland trail

The annual EFA mini-tour of Rutland took place at the weekend of October 9th/10th, with all the usual elements present and correct - a motley crew of EFA representatives led by Martin Samuel and Mike Fenn and competitive but friendly matches at Oakham and Uppingham against various combinations of schoolboys, staff and Oakham Monday club members.

The 2010 Ipswich Tournament for the Graves Cup finally took place on the 16th/17th October, a mere 10 months later than scheduled and thankfully unaffected by severe weather conditions this time round.

2010/11: Perrie/Joyce and Cooley/Ganguly win the Under 25s

The first trophies of the 2010/11 Fives season were decided at Eton on Sunday 19th September, as the National Under 25 Champions were crowned. A large and high quality field produced some thrilling Fives during the course of the day. The eventual winners in the men's tournament were Ryan Perrie and Andrew Joyce, who beat Rory Griffiths and Matt Mckeever in a fast and skilful final, and the ladies winners were Charlotta Cooley and Anita Ganguly, who beat Dominique Redmond and Emily Scoones in a five game classic.

Opening of the Shrewsbury Fives Courts – 9th October 2010

The project to refurbish the School’s Fives Courts started in 2003 when the OSEFC brought to the then Headmaster’s attention a multitude of problems, including dangerous roofing, cracked floors, sweating courts, poor lighting, a hazardous apron surround, crumbling pointing and a poor standard of general maintenance.
