Guy Butler (1899-1981)

Guy Montagu Butler was the son of Edward Montagu Butler, Harrow House Master, and grandson of Dr H Montagu Butler, former Head Master of Harrow.

He entered The Park, his father's House, in 1913. He was Head of School, Captain of Cricket, Football and Association and Victor Ludorum in 1917. He played in the School Fives pair with HR Bathurst Norman. He was at Trinity College, Cambridge and President of the CUAC in 1921-2. He was Amateur Champion Quarter Mile in 1919; 220 yards in 1926. He represented Britain in the Olympic games of 1920 and 1924, winning a gold, a silver and two bronze medals for 400 metres and 4 x 400 metres. He held the world record for the 300 yards in 1927. Butler was an Assistant Master at Lancing College from 1922-8. He was Secretary of the Eton Fives Association from 1934-1938. Later he was Athletics Manager at the White City Stadium and a writer and lecturer on Athletics. In Word War II he worked at the Foreign Office and was a Lieutenant in the Bedfordshire Regiment.
