Planning a venture into the unknown
It is a quarter of a century since the white man played Eton Fives in Africa; thus with India and Australia now firmly established Richard and I decided as long ago as July 1987 that this had to be the next assignment.

Alhaji Ahmadu Bello: The Sarduana of Sokoto
Sir Gawain Westray Bell was Governor of Northern Nigeria from 1957-1962. There he worked closely with Alhaji Ahmadu Bello, the Sarduana of Sokoto, who was a keen supporter of Fives in Northern Nigeria. The extracts below come from his book "An Imperial Twilight", which was published in 1989.

Kenneth Gandar Dower, whose astonishing versatility ranged through most moving ball games to racing Cheetahs and big game hunting was captain of Eton Fives at Cambridge, where he was a scholar, and in the Rugby Fives team for three years. According to a contemporary writer he had, when at his best, no superior at Eton Fives and, at Rugby Fives, was original and 'really good'.
